What makes this movie Worth Watching
The film is based on Edmond Rostand's 1897 play, which itself is a romanticized depiction of a real Cyrano de Bergerac, a 17th-century French soldier and writer. The story taps into anxieties about physical appearance and societal expectations, particularly the pressure on men to be both strong and sensitive.
- Gérard Depardieu's phenomenal and Oscar-nominated performance as Cyrano, capturing both his bravado and his deep-seated insecurities.
- The sweeping romance and tragic love triangle between Cyrano, Roxane, and Christian, exploring themes of beauty, intelligence, and sacrifice.
- The stunning visuals and costumes recreate 17th-century France with vivid detail, enhancing the immersive experience.
- The witty and poetic dialogue, largely faithful to Rostand's original play, is both entertaining and thought-provoking.
Fun Facts
- Jean-Paul Rappeneau won the César Award for Best Director, and the film itself won Best Film at the same awards ceremony.
- Depardieu trained extensively in sword fighting to prepare for the role, ensuring the duels felt authentic and exciting.
