- Robert Redford's character, Denys Finch Hatton, was based on a real-life figure who had a brief affair with Karen Blixen. In reality, however, he died in a plane crash shortly after their separation, unlike the fictionalized version in the film.
- The film's lead actress, Meryl Streep, had to learn Danish and Swedish for her role as Karen Blixen, whose writings were originally published in those languages.
- During production, over 400 Swahili-speaking extras were hired to depict the local Maasai tribe. To ensure authenticity, the director David Lean spent a week living with the Maasai prior to filming.
