Backdrop

What makes this movie Worth Watching

Released during Japan's economic bubble era, 'Ring' can be seen as a commentary on the excesses and unintended consequences of rapid technological advancement and consumerism. Additionally, it was inspired by urban legends and folklore about vengeful spirits in Japanese culture.

  • The movie offers a unique blend of horror, mystery, and suspense that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. The acting is compelling, particularly by Rikiya Kurokawa as Sadako Yamamura. The cinematography is hauntingly beautiful and adds to the overall eerie atmosphere. Lastly, the theme of technological obsession and its consequences is both timely and thought-provoking.

Fun Facts

  • The iconic image of Sadako crawling out of the well is a reference to real-life tragic events that occurred at Aokigahara forest, known as Japan's suicide forest. The number 7 (seven days to live after watching the video) has significant symbolism in Japanese culture, as it represents imperfection and bad luck. Lastly, the 'Ring' trilogy spawned a remake, 'The Ring' (2002), which gained international acclaim.

This film is very Japanese. If the objective of any horror movie is to scare, then Ringu succeeds with flying colours. Everything about this movie is genuinely disturbing and unsettling. From the mythology of the tale to the ghastly contorted faces of the corpses that Sada, the demon of the story leaves in her wake.
